Producing the RF to reference journal crossmap.

  • On the TFGUI window, select Journals > RF to ref journal Xmap The crossmap will appear as a separate window.
  • Adjust the size of the circles by using the annotate menu on the crossmap figure. Selecting *2 will double the size of the circles, selecting /2 will have the size of the circles.

Below shows a crossmap from the mad_cow example. The list below describes the elements of the research front to reference journal crossmap:

  1. Plot area The plot shows a matrix of circles. Given research front (RF) at position i on the y axis, and reference journal j on the x position. The circle at position (i,j) on the map is proportional to the number of papers in RF i that cite reference journal j. Large concentrations of circles indicate a group of research fronts using a group of reference journals, although there is typically a lot of overlap of usage.
  2. Research front dendrogram The dendrogram and horizontal placement of research fronts is identical to the research fronts in the timeline.
  3. Research front labels Same placement as the reserarch fronts in the timeline.
  4. Journal cocitation dendrogram This is the dendrogram from journal cocitation clustering. General groups of related reference journal can be discerned as separate subtrees of the dendrogram.
  5. Reference journal labels The reference journals are printed as they are given in the WOS file.
  6. crosshairs Clicking in the plot area will cause a horizonal line and vertical line to appear. These crosshairs can be used to find the labels associated with specific circles of interest on the map.
  7. annotate menu This menu contains annotation tools for resizing circles, adjusting plot margins for most readable labels, and for zooming to interesting parts of the crossmap.
  8. webpage menu This control can be used to generate a webpage containing the crossmap.
