Using the project database
Introduction
Setting up a DIVA projects folder
- If you haven't already done so, create a folder for your DIVA projects, e.g., diva_projects.
- Within the DIVA porjects folder, create a new folder called template to hold the template database.
- Open the template folder and download the template database to it. You can find a copy of the template database here.
- Unpack the template database into the template folder.
Setting up a folder for a single project
- In the DIVA projects folder, create a folder for the new project, e.g., nanotubes.
- Open the project folder and place a copy of the template database in the folder.
- Copy the downloaded Web of Science (WOS) files into the folder.
- Each WOS file name must begin with "isi_", and must have file type ".txt". e.g., isi_nano1.txt, isi_nano2.txt, Files with names that don't begin with "isi_" are ignored when reading data into the database.
- Downloaded WOS files come with Unix endlines (LF) and must be converted to DOS endlines (CR LF). An easy way to do this is to open each WOS file using Wordpad, then immediately save the file from Wordpad. Wordpad reads files with Unix endlines correctly, but saves the files with DOS endlines.
- You are now ready to read the WOS records into the database.
- You can get a small set of WOS files covering the topic of mad cow disease by contacting Steven Morris at www.conceptsymbols.com.
Reading WOS files into the database
- Open the database, select Modules, and double click on the read_data module as shown below.

- The panel shown below should appear. Click anywhere in the upper half of the panel (in the code window), then click on the right pointing blue triangle to start the program.
- The immediate window will show the files that are read, the number of records found in each file, and the cumulative number of records as each file is read. If a file shows 0 records read, then it probably hasn't been converted to DOS endlines. Resave the file using Wordpad and try again.
